Representation in Government.
I try in this column to avoid comparing administrations – the differences between nations are already only too apparent and complicated. But over breakfast today with a special friend we got to the core of the Brexit muddle – too many politicians!
Here are the numbers:
The US with 3.8 million square mile of territory and a population of 328 million, has 425 representatives in the House and 100 in the Senate – roughly one representative every 7000 squre miles.
The UK with 96 thousand square miles of land and a population of 66 million, has 625 MP’s and 800 members of the House of Lords. That is roughly one representative every 67 square miles – no wonder they are confused!
Have a good day, James
